 Evaluation

Interpretation of the Brief: For the interpretation of the brief, I wrote about who is the client and what are their main objectives. I also mentioned client's foundation, stakeholders, and selected locations of the client for their customers to visit and explore around. As for the audience, I mentioned the age group which is between 16-25 years of age and any audience can be from any backgrounds, cultures, genders and religion; and their aim is to explore Sunderland. The requirements of the client was to make a documentary or a print advert, I choose print adverts because print adverts are a lot easier to make than a documentary in my opinion and my idea is to make three print adverts for the client so they can promote their organisation and attract visitors to come and visit Sunderland.

SUNDERLAND IS A £1.25m GREAT PLACE - Sunderland Culture

Location Scouting: I had to pick three to four locations of potential locations so I could go to one of those places and take photos for my print advert. The four places that I choose are the Stadium of Light, Mowbray Park, City Centre and Wearmouth Bridge because there are some of the most popular places in Sunderland and the aim of the client is to bring visitors into these places so they can have a first good impression of Sunderland. In each location, I wrote some added information about them such as how Wearmouth Bridge is probably considered the most photographed places in Sunderland due to the lake and it's surroundings and Mowbray Park because it is popular place to relax and have a quite spare time with family or friends and plant museum is also makes the really park stand out.

Risk Assessment: I have done a risk assessment to highlight the dangers of working on my print advert during college. The main purpose of a risk assessment is to let the teacher know that their students are aware of the dangers when working from college, examples like electric shock, allergic reaction and tripping hazard. In each of these dangers, there is a control measures which you write down all of the safety measures to prevent the dangers during a work environment for example, to prevent from tripping always watch your steps when walking.

Pitch: For the pitch, I basically wrote a small summary of the interpretation of the brief. The only difference is I included product examples for what my final product is going to be and I got these examples from Sunderland Vibe because I like the way how the print adverts are designed. What I'm trying to say from these examples products is a demonstration of what my final product is going to be and lastly I showed my potential locations that I could use for my final product, locations such as city centre, Wearmouth Bridge and the glass centre as I want to pick good spots to paint Sunderland in a positive light.

Flat Plan: Before I started making my three print adverts, I had to plan out my final products and what I have done is getting images of Sunderland and putting texts of layouts that I'm planning to put them in the print advert but all three flat plans will be different. Each flat plan has their own main image and different layout because I was experimenting around until I found the one that I liked the most and using it to the final product. In each flat plan I gave my opinions on each one and I ended it up liking the second examples because of the main image and the layout of it.

Print Advert Research: I had to do research about print adverts in general, which is a different way of advertising that uses printed media like magazines and newspapers for the client's intended target audience. I searched for the main characteristics of a print advert, these characteristics are essential in order for the print advert being successful and one of the most important characteristics out of 4 in my opinion are headline and image because for headline it attracts audience to the product and image because when you show one of the most popular places in Sunderland, it will catch the eye of potential visitors like an image of Stadium of Light, Mowbray Park, or Wearmouth Bridge etc.

Analysis of Existing Products: I looked for examples that I could as inspirations for my final product and one of my most popular examples to use is Sunderland Vibe and I choose on of their print adverts with the lighthouse and Northern Spire Bridge as the main image. In the analysis of the first example is that they included a rainbow above the main images because a rainbow paints Sunderland in a positive light and also could mean that Sunderland is a happy and safe place to visit. The next example is from 'Save Your Summer' and they choose 'Angel of the North' statue in Gateshead because it's not only the most popular site in Gateshead but the whole of UK, in my opinion the advert was okay but the imagery is good but the only thing that is missing is the social media details. The last example is the Penshaw Monument print advert, just like the Angel of the North statue the Penshaw Monument is one of the most popular sites in the UK as for the print advert, it had a few problems and one of the problems was the logo and a lack of social media details.

I also mentioned the different camera angles and mise-en-scene

Audience Research: Audience research is basically to get to know your own audience through surveys and knowing what are their opinions about Sunderland and the questions were 'what are your opinions about Sunderland?' and the responses were mixed, some said that it depends when it comes to people in terms of their politeness in certain areas of the city. The next question was 'is life in the North East really comfortable?' and majority replied no and the last question is 'would you recommend anyone living in Sunderland?' and the responses are mixed, some said 'yes' and some said that they wouldn't recommend to anyone to live in Sunderland. After that I had to do an Audience Profile which shows the type audience are, their ambitions, age, gender, and social grade. The people that are described in the audience profile are explorers that want to get to know Sunderland and see for themselves if Sunderland is as bad as other people say.

Production & Post-Production Diary: A production and post-production diary is where I show the beginning and end of my final product and show drafts of my final product to show the progression process. Documenting the process of my final product is really important because you are showing everyone your progression of your editing skills and photoshop skills and how progressively got better over time by experimenting around with the drafts and kinda choose which draft is better etc. After I choose the draft that I liked the most, I used for the last two print adverts because my final product is making three print adverts for the client.

Final Product & Feedback: I gather all the feedback of my final product to a separate post and I just reflected on the feedback and give my opinions if I agree or disagree with the feedback that I have received of my final products. The first feedback that I have done is to chose which one of this final products is better and 60% of people choose advert 3 to be the best one out of the 3 which I can see why because of the main image which was the Mowbray Park and the placing of texts. The next question was a general one which is 'what do you like about the advert?' and I had mixed responses, some said that 'the photo that has been taken and' the 'text on advert 3 works a lot better because its easier to read and contrasts better with the background' I agree with the other feedback and not so much for the other feedback because I think that all the 3 print adverts that I have made work together perfectly and effective for the client to attract audience. The final question was 'what changes would you make?' one said that they wouldn't change anything expect for the 'Visit Sunderland' font a bit larger and other feedback that I got was that they would change the 'Visit Sunderland' font as the same as the other adverts and also change social media logos in the same order as the other two. I have to agree with the feedback of organising social media as the same as the last two adverts and I will make those changes in my spare time really soon and as for the font change, I am happy with my fonts and I'm not going to change it.

After that I have compiled images that didn't make it to the final product and I basically pointed out the cons of these images and why they didn't make it to the final product. First one was from the park and I mentioned that if the draft photo made it to the final product, the print advert would be 'dull' because the glass building is far and blocked by the trees and that's why I decided to get closer to capture the lake and the glass building because by doing this, the advert will be a lot more eye-catching to the audience passing by looking at it. The next one was the old clock in the city centre, I took the photo of the clock facing at me; even though camera angle (which was worms eye view) was great but I did not like how the photo turned out because I think the photo would be better if I took the picture of the clock in slightly side ways so I can capture the road and shop that leads to the cinema and I decided to take the photo in another day because I want take it in a sunny day so to make Sunderland look positive and a happy place to visit. Lastly, the photo of Bridges' entrance, for this photo I used a low angle shot to capture the logo and the whole building, but the reason why this particular photo didn't make it to the final product is because there wasn't a lot of people coming in and out to the shopping centre as I want to present Sunderland as a busy place and not a place that looks so dull and empty.

Overall: I think that the B2 work was a bit easier than B1 for me, I didn't had to look for more research for B2 compared to B1 which I had to write a lot. In the beginning of working on B2, I had the option to make a documentary about the culture of Sunderland or make a print advert for the client to change people's perspectives about Sunderland, I ended up choosing print advert because it's easier for me to do a print advert than the documentary and having a lot of experience in Photoshop than film making. One of the most challenging things that I have done in B2 was actually going out and take photos that I need for my final product, why I find it challenging because the experience of taking photos with my phone felt weird in all honesty and it made the experience uncomfortable in my opinion. The only thing that I could have done better in B2 is the print adverts because even though I think they are great, but I think I could make them even better than the current ones I think.
